Presidents Message
Over our 80 year history, the FJCC has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of the
Jewish community of Flemington, Hunterdon County, and the surrounding region. From our
humble start serving the farmers and businessmen in a rural community, we have recently
completed construction of a spacious 24,000 square foot synagogue.

Our 225 member-families come from a diverse background. A few grew up in day schools
and yeshivot; others had little formal Jewish education. We welcome interfaith families into
our congregation, with non-Jewish spouses taking an active role in many of our programs and
events. I myself grew up in a large Reform congregation, as did some of our members.  We
consider ourselves a conservative congregation - traditional egalitarian is how we describe it -
though we remain unaffiliated with United Synagogue. Women participate fully in all aspects
of synagogue life, including leading services and reading Torah. Our rabbi of 19 years Evan
Jaffe, a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary, is perhaps our best asset!

Our congregation has been described as one of "doers".  Our members are more interested
in getting the job done, than talking about it in committee meetings. As the most recent
example, our new building project was run entirely by volunteers, from committee chairs to
our construction manager, from fundraising to a group of members who ran miles of telecom
and audio cable. If you want a place where your efforts can immediately make a difference,
the FJCC is where you belong.

If you are looking for a religious education for your children, you cannot find a better place
than the Flemington Jewish Community Center. Each student is given the attention they
need to succeed. We have recently added a position of special needs coordinator, and our
staff and aides work individually to meet each student where they are. Unlike many
synagogues, Rabbi Jaffe personally tutors each Bar and Bat Mitzvah student. Most of our
young adults continue with Hebrew High school, through graduation. Graduates of the FJCC
Hebrew School have gone on to take leadership positions at college campuses around the
country. We focus on giving our children the synagogue skills they need not only to
participate in services any where they go, but to be called upon to lead them.

We work hard at understanding the needs and desires of our congregants, which is evident in
the vast number of programs and services we offer. An active Sisterhood, Seniors Club, and
Youth Group provide for different needs of our members. We offer an increasing schedule of
adult education classes, including Beginning Hebrew, leading services, and discussion of
texts. As a member of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren, our
members take advantage of Jewish LIFE, a community-wide adult education consortium.

This is a place where you can expect a warm welcome, develop new friendships, and, if you
wish, become an active voice in your synagogue. It is a place where creative new ideas are
encouraged and supported. If you have any questions or issues that you wish to discuss,
please feel free to call Judy Gold-Feinberg, our Membership Committee Chairperson at 908-
788-4649 or me at 908-284-2027. I look forward to getting to know you, and hope that your
will consider membership in the Flemington Jewish Community Center.
