Junior Congregation, Tot Shabbat and Services
|
Services
Evening services are a regular part of the curriculum and all students will be required to
attend at the end of class on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. The Rabbi asks that
parents join their children rather than sit in their cars in the parking lot for the following
reasons:
4) The students behave better when sitting with adults.
3) It gives the children a sense that service attendance is not just a “kid’s thing” but
a mitzvah or obligation that lasts throughout their lives.
2) Weekly announcements are frequently made at the end of services.
1) And the Number One reason for attending services with your child is - you just
might learn something new.
Tot Shabbat
Tot Shabbat is an abbreviated Shabbat program designed for families with small children
second grade and younger. It is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of Shabbat at
an earlier hour starting at 6:15 and ending at 7:30. The program includes: an abbreviated
Kabbalat Shabbat Service conducted by the Rabbi followed by a mini Oneg. Tot Shabbat
will be offered four times during the year (refer to Program Highlights and the monthly
calendar). Flyers or emails will be sent home several weeks prior to each Tot Shabbat.
Junior Congrgation
Several times during the calendar year Junior Congregation Services will be held in the
synagogue classrooms.
1) Students in preschool – 3rd grades will meet from 10:30 – Noon.
2) The Rabbi’s Junior Congregation for students in 4th – 7th grades will meet from 9:
15 – 11:15 AM, in the multi-purpose room, and from 11:15 to the end of services
(approximately 12:15) in the sanctuary. For the first hour, the Rabbi will teach parts of
Berchote Hashachar, Pesukei D’zimrah and the Shacharit services. The students from
the Hebrew High School will take over for the Rabbi, and conduct the service for taking
the sefer Torah (Torah Scroll), and will chant part of the weekly Torah portion. The pre-
Bar/Bat Mitzvah students will have the opportunity to take an aliyah and learn the proper
procedure involved in doing so. They will be called to the Torah, kiss the scroll, and recite
the appropriate berachot (blessings). The High School students will conduct the service
for returning the Sefer Torah to the ark, after which all participants will join the adults in
the sanctuary for the Musaf service (additional service).
3) With this schedule, the 4th – 7th grade students can get the best of both worlds –
a chance to learn the services at a slower pace with the Rabbi and to be part of the adult
service that each student will lead at his/her Bar/Bat Mitzvah. It is hoped more students
will participate than did last year.
Junior Congregation Kiddush Sponsorship
Junior Congregation is an integral part of the Hebrew School curriculum and a wonderful
opportunity for families to attend services with their children. The Jr. Congregation/Oneg
fee is no longer a separate fee, but is included in the annual Registration and
Programming Fee. Parents are required to fill out the sign up sheet for each child
enrolled in Hebrew School for shopping and Kiddush preparation. Kiddush will follow
Junior Congregation in the social hall.
